Sydney shooting victim makes appeal

A man who was shot during a fight in Sydney's inner west last month has made a plea for anyone who saw the incident to come forward.

The 21-year-old, who does not wish to be named, was shot during an altercation shortly after midnight at Strathfield Park in Strathfield on February 8.

The man drove himself to Lidcombe where he was found by police and taken to hospital.

He's since recovered from his injuries and recently joined detectives to help them pull together a video reconstruction of the shooting, police said.

The 21-year-old said a number of people were at Strathfield Park at the time of the shooting.

"All I ask is that they do the right thing and contact police, so the people who did this to me can be brought to justice," he said in a statement with NSW Police on Monday.

Detective Sergeant Karl Leis from Flemington Local Area Command said police were confident they would catch those responsible.

"Nevertheless, we would still like to speak to anyone with information that may help us, particularly those people who we believe were at the park on the night of the shooting," he said.

Det Sgt Leis also reminded the public they could provide information anonymously and securely.

Sydney hospital job cuts avoidable: govt

The NSW health minister says a cap on labour costs at southwest Sydney hospitals will not necessarily translate into job cuts.

The opposition claims to have obtained documents showing more than $7 million will be slashed from South Western Sydney Local Health District staffing budgets this year.

NSW Labor leader John Robertson said the cuts would hit six hospitals in 2012/13, causing patient waiting times to blow out.

"It is impossible to quarantine care in our hospital wards and operating theatres from the O'Farrell government's extraordinary attack on hospital funding in NSW," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

The budget documents showed Liverpool Hospital would lose nearly $3.2 million, Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital $1.49 million and Campbelltown Hospital would face cuts of just over $1.39 million, he said.

The cuts would also hit hospitals in Fairfield, Bowral and Camden, and could mean 73 job cuts this year alone, according to Labor.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner said hospitals would try to meet labour expense caps by working smarter, not cutting staff.

"South Western Sydney has advised savings will be made by introducing smarter ways of working, for example reducing reliance on staff overtime and the use of agency staff," she said in a statement.

She accused the opposition of "making (health workers) fear for their jobs", adding the health district in question had received an overall funding boost of 5.7 per cent in the last budget.

But Labor health spokesman Andrew McDonald said patient care would be compromised.

"As a practising paediatrician with 40 years experience working in the NSW health system, I know these funding cuts will cause absolute chaos in our hospitals," Dr McDonald said.

VB NSW Cup Match Report

Mounties have suffered a disappointing loss in round 3 of the VB NSW Cup going down to Cronulla 32-6 at Aubrey Keech reserve Hinchinbrook on Saturday.

Despite Matt McIllrick, Mark Nicholls and Edrick Lee all returning from the Raiders to play their first games for Mounties this season, the home side never looked comfortable and Cronulla were able to get early points on the board when they crossed for a converted try in the 7th minute to lead 6-0.

Just five minutes later the Sharks were in again to make it 10-0 after the conversion went wide of the posts and within minutes it was turning into a one sided affair when Peachy crossed for the Sharks and the conversion gave the visitors a commanding 16-0 lead.

To their credit the young Mounties halves then steadied the ship and in the 26th minute Dimitri Pelo scored for Mounties with Scott Jones converting for the scoreline to read 16-6, and it remained that way until half time with Mounties looking to find a way to crawl back into the game.

The Sharks however had other ideas and completely dominated the second half scoring in the 49th and 62nd minute for a scoreline of 26-6 and the chances of a Mounties comeback were severely dented when backrower Clay Priest was sent off for a dangerous tackle.

Cronulla were able to close out the match in the 75th minutes when they scored another converted try for a final score of 32-6.

In better news for Mounties the Ron Massy Cup team were victorious in their trial match against Windsor at AKR beating the visitors 24-22 after trailing 16-14 at half time and Mounties Sydney Shield were triumphant in the final of the OAMPS pre-season cup downing Guildford 46-28 at Lidcombe Oval.

Mounties led 30-0 at quarter time with coach Glen Antonelli rotating his squad of 21 players heavily in the 2nd quarter for a half time lead of 34-6.

In the 3rd quarter it was a converted try a piece with Mounties leading 40-12 at the drinks break and scoring again soon after to make it 46-12 before Guildford rallied with some late tries.

Billy King was in fine form for Mounties with a personal tally of 24 points.

Mounties next game in VB NSW Cup is against Newcastle away while the RM Cup and Sydney Shield have the week off before their respective competitions commence.
